Empty, old hive wasn’t bee tight

A hive floor potentially provides about 2cm of extra depth for comb to be drawn from the bottom of each frame.

In my haste to find a floor, I didn’t realise that putting the old hive containing old frames onto a flat base, would push the roof up 2cm.

At the time I was confident that the growing number of bees taking an interest in the hive, couldn’t enter it.

Later, one of my other hive swarmed, and congregated beyond my reach in a tree. As luck would have it, the swarm would took flight again and made their home in the old hive.
